Vintage Hair Pins

A pair of vintage hair pins, chosen for the beautiful contrast between their materials and detailing.

The piece on the left is carved from pearly white acetate, with an elongated silhouette and intricate openwork pattern. Slight variations in tone and translucency give the material an almost nacre-like quality, while the graphic carving makes it feel distinctly decorative.

The piece on the right is made from mother of pearl, with a softly luminous surface that shifts subtly in the light. Fine engraved detailing follows the edge of the curved form, while the long pin passes through the centre to secure it in the hair.

Together, the two pieces are a lovely example of how something entirely functional can also be treated as an object of ornament — one made from acetate, the other from natural shell, but both sharing the same quiet luminosity.
